Digital camcorder recommendations?

PostPosted by Steve Dubya » Fri May 07, 2010 2:22 pm

I'm not looking to shoot any sort of HD, but I do want to be able to routinely pick up sounds that may come from more than a foot or so away from the camera. Ideally I'd like a name-ish brand, mostly because of the poor performance that my mother-in-law's SVP camera has been giving her.* I'd also like the capability of being able to easily obtain/hook up a longer life battery and external mic.

Anyone have a camera that has either worked real well for them or perhaps one I should go out of my way to avoid?

*This is the same camera that we got for her birthday, and that her computer does not recognize anymore; very weird.

Avoid anything that can be easily stolen by an octopus.
STARE INTO MY EYES FOREVER
LET ME TAKE YOU IN MY ARMS
DANCE WITH ME OUT IN THE GARDEN
WHERE TOMORROW NEVER COMES
FOLLOW ME INTO THE DARKNESS
WHERE THE NIGHTMARES NEVER FADE
WHISPER DREAMS MY FALLEN ANGEL
FROM WHICH YOU WILL NEVER WAKE
Religion starts wars. Spirituality ends them

Another caveat - I don't intend on doing any underwater filming.

We use a Panasonic SDR-S26 and it works very well for my uses.
