Slayer's Journal

My name is Loretta, and i'm a Slayer. It looks weird written out, but i don't have a Watcher, at least not currently, so if anyone is going to learn from my experiences in the future, i'm going to have to be the one to document them.

The lineage of a Slayer used to be simple. One would fall, and another would rise in her place. But things are different now; there are a lot of Slayers, and few Watchers to explain things or compare notes. Many Slayers don't even know what they are. But we do our thing, those of us that survive long enough to figure it out, and when we fail, someone else continues. Enough about that. I'll let someone with a Watcher talk about the boring stuff.

I came to Serendipity six months ago. I'm not sure what i was looking for, but i found a lot of demon activity. It was perfect to keep me busy, and i easily fell into a routine: sleep by day, patrol by night, kill vamps, rough up some punks in an alley; there was never a lack of things to do. It was hard, and sometimes lonely, but i was never afraid. Who could hurt a Slayer? Alright, sometimes i was scared. There were a few fights i almost didn't win. But this isn't about those.

Two weeks ago, i met Trent and Peter. Actually, they interrupted a big vampire ambush that i had planned on handling myself, but i can't say the help was unwelcome. Since then, we've been a team. Well, Trent and me at least, since Peter left a few days ago. Others have come and gone too; now there's Allison and Eric. I guess i shouldn't be so vague, since the point of this is to keep a helpful record, but i don't think i should be too specific either, for everyone's safety.

I really don't know how i should be doing this. Maybe i should just list things out:

09/18: Slayer Powers manifested
10/07: Watcher killed; left town
03/21: arrived in Serendipity, stopped counting kills after around 20 vamps
09/03: met Trent and Peter, killed vamps on the beach, first run-in with an Afrit
09/04: met Becca (Slayer)
09/05: got my first paying job, met Jenson (Becca's Watcher) Patrick (unspecified demon), Eric (a nerd) and Allison (a cop)
09/06: second run-in with Afrit (Peter was seriously injured)
09/07: Jenson trapped Afrit
09/08: Peter displayed strange healing abilities, met Kit (witch)
09/10: met hunters from Portland
09/11: run-in with a man-eating cow
09/12: met Gary--guy who thinks he's a Slayer
09/13: Peter left town due to mental issues; killed Aryos (horned demon); sent killer cow to another dimension by way of a magic stick
09/14: dusted a standard vamp, slightly nasty

I read though the last entry, and it's really clear that this isn't going to do anyone any good without some details. I guess this isn't the place to be cautious or covert--it defeats the purpose.

First the demons. We've battled two (three if you count the cow) in addition to the large local vamp population.

Afrit: middle-eastern smoke/vengeance demon.
Boils the blood of violent murder victims and becomes corporeal from the bloody mist to wreak vengeance on the guilty--seems to favor crushing skulls.
Also seen as a sandstorm or tornado, in which form it may pick up victims and sandblast them to death.
Apparently goes for the worst evil first, then gradually becomes less picky until even minor transgressions are enough.
Very hard to kill (we haven't found a way yet) but can be contained with magic (Jenson is the guy to track down and ask about this).
Stabbing with silver weapons causes it to go away temporarily.

Aryos: horned demon that thought he was very persuasive, but wasn't really. Died easy. Carried a magic stick for summoning carnivorous cows.

Carnivorous cows: disappear when attacked. Must be sent back (or away?) with magic stick (smacking them with it works just fine).

The team...or whatever the appropriate term is:

Trent: clearly our fearless leader.
Mechanic and tow truck driver by day, ass-kicking demon hunter by night.
Favors weapons of the cutting and bashing type, but doesn't mind guns or bare fists either.
Werewolf, but doesn't change unless he needs to (which is apparently never).

Allison: Trent's fiance, motherly care-giver type.
Good cop, definitely on our side.
Doesn't mind turning a blind eye to minor indescretions if your heart is in the right place.
Standard human, very pretty, not a bad shot.

Eric: Allison's brother
High school guy, computer geek--knows his stuff
No fighting skills, but very determined
Also standard human, kind of a wimpy but cute

Loretta: Slayer
Coffee wench
Impulsive and generally dangerous.
Will Kill it With Wood!

Peter: Ex-(current?) Initiative guniea pig (MIA)
Former museum employee with ambitions of opening a dojo before leaving town
Mentally unpredictable
Sometimes has visions that help us locate demons

If some young, impressionable Slayer reads this in the future, and she learns only one thing from my mistakes, let it be this: (most) guys are only human. And humans break very easily. Especially in the ribs. And then they never shut up about it. You'd think he was the first person it ever happened to.

On the subject of romance in a world of demon slayage, it should be mentioned that a "long engagement" comes out to approximately two months. And if the bride was a bit of a control freak before...well...everyone look out. I don't think there's anything so terrifying as a woman with a gun being told that she can't order the flowers she wants--the ones she's dreamed of since she was a little girl--out of season.

If there's a god, please help us. We haven't even looked at gowns yet.

It's been exactly one month since i dusted my last vamp, and i haven't seen any demonic activity in town since.

You would think that's a good thing, but it's really not. It means one of two things: either the real nasties have gotten smart, and are coordinating an all-out attack against us (which would be bad), or we've killed the last of them, word is out that Serendipity is not to be messed with, and i have to leave (this would be the worst thing ever). Because what good is a Slayer that isn't slaying? I can't stay where i'm not needed.

This shouldn't be an upsetting prospect; it comes with the job, afterall. But i've let Serendipity become my home. Allison and Eric and Trent are the family i never had. Now that i have that, I'm not sure i can talk myself into giving it up and fighting without them. Why should i? What does it matter? There's a lot of stuff attached to that way of thinking that i'm really not ready to explore. I want to at least stay until the wedding, but every day the guilt grows. I can't ruin Allison's special day, and if i tell her how i'm feeling now, i know she will worry. I can't do that.

Still no news in the world of the supernatural.

But Peter is back. Trent brought him by late last night. He doesn't remember jack about who he is, but hopefully he still gets visions. If so, we might finally break the cycle of inactivity around here. If not, we're still screwed, but no more so than we were two months ago.

Anyway. I should get some sleep. Today, Allison takes me shopping for a bridesmaid's dress. That should be exhausting.

We are go for visions! Peter had one last night over dinner, warning us of incoming seamonster pirates. Awesome news! Well, except maybe for Allison. She's really worried they will come at a bad time and ruin her wedding. We're obviously distracted from the preparations, and even she is staying up late to do research. I feel bad for her; this is supposed to be her special day, and it would be really sad if it was postponed or ruined. But i suppose she did know what she was getting into, being engaged to a demon-hunting werewolf and all.

Peter, Trent, and I are taking turns watching the coast for activity. Besides the occasional tanker ship, things are completely quiet. Inside town it's not much better; the dead are staying dead these days, which i guess is good. With Peter back, maybe we can still find enough to do that i don't have to go somewhere else. I can hope.

Later today, i'm helping Peter set up his dojo. I'm really excited to get back to my roots, so to speak. Part of my training with my watcher was to teach children self defense. It's so important, with so much badness out there. And we Slayers and Hunters can only be so many places at once. Maybe with a "real" place to do it, i can even talk Eric into learning a few things. I don't think Allison wants to hand him a gun anytime soon.

PS: the dress Allison picked for me isn't so bad. But i could do without the shoes.

Pirate stuff:

1. Captain Juan Corso plus crew
2. Cursed to monstrous form and a pocket dimension a coven of witches unsuccessfully marooned them to
3. Need to kidnap a human woman and keep her in their dimension to temporarily break curse
4. Prefer pretty blond girls, engaged to men associated with the supernatural; they generally take her on her wedding day

Obviously this leaves little question as to who they're going to target and when. Allison and Trent are not amused by this. Eric seems pretty scared too, and is using all of his spare time to look for a solution. So far we have little, but Peter is going to try and talk to the Quartermaster while the captain is distracted. I'm going to go with him. Neither Trent nor Allison think it's a good idea, but they don't have any better ones. Things are tense. Allison is changing her wedding plans to try and avoid mass carnage of guests. Her extended relatives don't know what's going on, of course, so rumors are flying. There is much angst and dissent among the Murphy clan.

I'm working for Peter now. I think his dojo will do ok. I'm much better suited for this than serving coffee. I have to work somewhere, may as well be close to a fellow hunter. Eric had his first lesson today. He's got a lot to learn, but he's giving it a good effort. I just don't want to have to worry about him so much.

We're all putting on a good show to each other of pretending to be in good spirits. Peter even threw a bachelor party for Trent. But despite the festivities and apparent hopefulness, we are still well aware of the impending danger: everyone was present and accounted for within the Murphy estate, well before midnight, including Peter.

I wish i had more to report on the matter, but it seems to be a wait-and-see sort of thing. My only hope is that since Peter hasn't had any more visions, it could be a sign that we're taking the right approach. My only real comfort is that he's going to be the one that has my back, and if i get trapped in a fish-monster dimension, he'll presumably be there with me. Yeah, i said it: I think he'd make even a dimension in which sea-monster-pirates have been banished to by vengeful witches a little more bearable.

Obviously i'm not going to be taking my journal along, just in case i do end up off-world. The whole point is to leave some clues for anyone that comes along behind us. So it'll be right here, in some conspicuous spot in Allison's guest room, just in case. Hopefully someone of the supernaturally-friendly persuasion will come across it before any mundanes have had a chance to discount it as fiction. Better yet, that Allison, Trent, and Eric end up safe at home no matter what, so anyone that comes after can hear it straight from them instead, no slayer's journal necessary.

Captain Juan Corso no longer leads a crew of cursed fish-monster pirates, terrorizing the coast of Serendipity and stealing brides.

All we had to do was convince the Quartermaster that the curse was on the captain, not the crew, and that mutiny was the solution. It was a gamble, since the captain could have won the battle instead of the Quartermaster, and even after the captain was slain, there could have been other factors keeping the curse in place, but it all worked out, and while Trent got hurt pretty badly, the team is otherwise whole.

The weird thing about the whole thing: the Slayer didn't end up fighting with anyone this time! I didn't even get to see the fight. But i'm going to ask Eric for the details, and possibly learn even more when i meet Samuel (the Quartermaster himself) at midnight.

Trent and Allison are finally married, as of yesterday. Trent seems to be reasonably healed-up too.

Lots of drama on the personal front though. Been spending more time with Samuel than anyone thinks is appropriate--not that that alone bothers me, but all the 'you should really do this' and 'that really isn't right' stuff really pisses me off. I've had to take care of myself for years; why is it all the sudden no one thinks i can make my own choices? And it's not just Trent and Allison anymore. Eric made me so mad last night that i almost left town. I'm still not sure that isn't the best thing to do right now, but i can't say i wouldn't miss everyone. Then there's Peter. The more i talk to him, the more confused i get. But we've figured out, once again, that whatever's going on with us just won't work out. There's just so much about all of it that hurts. But i guess that's part of having people to care about.

Today is being spent trying to undo all the damage and hurt from last night and this morning. Allison and Trent say they want to adopt me. I don't know what they're thinking, or how that could even work, but i don't think they realize what they're doing. Do they really want to be stuck with me on paper? It's all very complicated.

The really fucked up thing about being a Slayer is the realization that killing monsters is the easy part.

Family. Love. Being normal. Those are the hard things. The only reason i say they're not impossible is that i'm still young and stupid enough to believe they could still happen.

Here's the sad truth: people are frail. Their bodies, their hearts, and their minds all have weak spots. Give a man a girl he cares about (daughter, sister, friend, lover, it doesn't really matter), and no matter how strong or invincible she is, he'll put himself in danger for her before protecting himself just about every time. It's dangerous to love someone. It'll get you hurt every time, in the best of circumstances, and in this line of work, it will most likely get someone killed.

Last night, Eric and i were up against a hungry vamp with an explosive device in its head. Tonight, Trent, Peter, Eric, and i dusted four. It did not go well though. Peter and i would have both been killed if we were anywhere near normal. Trent was hurt pretty bad, and so was Eric. Eric needed stitches, but only because he was stupid and tried to help a Slayer instead of getting the hell out of the way once things turned bad. Peter did the same thing, but he's already healed up and i'm not yet, so i guess that can be forgiven.

And that wasn't even the worst part of my day. i was also informed that i have to go to school, see a shrink, and be escorted day and night by armed guard (Trent and/or Allison). So much for my usual methods of getting things done. Am i really going to play well-adjusted teenager? Is this what i've chosen by staying? Thanks to a little intervention from law enforcement, it looks like i'm committed to it. I just hope i don't do more harm to Allison or her job when i fail.

I'm pretty sure there isn't a word for the type of day we had today.

It started out ok enough: Peter came over for breakfast, and we all went to the beach to do a little hocus pocus to see if we could figure out what was behind the exploding vamp heads. Peter suspected secret military organization stuff, but i thought he was just being his paranoid self. Turns out he was right though, at least according to what he saw between suddenly getting his memory back, and whatever vision assaulted him next. The details were sketchy and he was careful not to say anything specific, but this has Initiative written all over it. At least as hinted at by Peter. He was certain they were coming back for him.

Of course, he's gone now. He tends to leave like that. But he's in a habit of coming back too, so maybe he will. It felt like goodbye though--the type that doesn't seem real and makes you want him to stay forever.

Susan Heicht, half demon (byblos) arrived with Peter at the beach too (this was earlier of course, but i just thought to add it). She claims to have spent time helping a slayer before. Didn't ask who, but she claims to be good at research. Maybe we'll see. Or not. I don't like her.

Did a late patrol with Trent, but it turned up nothing. Maybe whatever's out there was looking for Peter instead. I hope they didn't find him.

I hope he's somewhere safe.

11/24

First day of school. Not as bad as i thought it would be, but certainly not wonderful either.

12/18

The good news: I single-handedly took out a nest of vamps (population: 7).

The bad news: My tip came by way of a kid from school that said vamps had sent to find me.

The worse news: He was brought to my attention by an ex-watcher, who thinks i should drop school and do the slayer thing day and night. He makes some good points, occasionally, but i don't think i'm going to mention him to the family anytime soon. Will skip school tomorrow though, to see what he's all about.
