PVI to mass produce color e-paper by the end of 2009

Prime View International (PVI) will start mass production of flexible electrophoretic displays (EPDs) in the second quarter of this year, and color EPDs by the end of the year, according to market sources.

The sources indicated that PVI's Korean subsidiary Hydis is also expected to start shipping EPDs by the second quarter this year. Since taking over Hydis in July 2008, PVI has been working on transferring part of the EPD production to Hydis, and PVI estimates that over half of Hydis' capacity will be devoted to EPD production by 2010, the sources said.

PVI currently has four production plants: one 2.5G plant in Hsinchu, and three – 2.5G, 3G, and 3.5G – from Hydis, the sources added.

Almost, EPD is the same E-ink technology that is used in the Amazon Kindle, Sony Readers, and so on. However unlike LCD screens, it isn't backlit, so there is no eyestrain from reading for long periods of time.

There will be 2 advantages in the new PVI screens will be the flexibility and color capabilities. They won't be up to showing movies for another few years, but a comic book should look incredible on this device.
